  6. With its continuing commitment to LAN Manager/X, Hewlett Packard
  7. began shipping the latest version of LM/X for HP9000 systems
  8. May 7, 1992.  Features of this release include the new Microsoft
  9. LAN Manager client V2.1, and a file locking mechanism that allows
  10. LM/X and Pacer servers to share HP-UX files between Macintosh and PC
  11. LM clients, providing for Macintosh connectivity.
  12.  
  13. With the introduction of the new products, the previous versions
  14. are no longer available.  B1003C replaced B1003B, B1011C replaced
  15. B1011B.
  16.  
  17. The LM/X product is a licensed product.  What this means to you and
  18. your customer is that each server running LM/X must have a valid
  19. license to ensure operability.  The "license" is made up of two
  20. numbers; a serial number and an activation key.  The server may be
  21. purchased for 8/16/32/64/128/256/512 or 1024 users.  The number of
  22. users is the maximum number which may be connected to the server at any
  23. one time.

  25. With the new release, some changes were initiated with respect to
  26. the licensing scheme.  Licenses for SEs were changed from
  27. version B to Version C.  Those SEs on Internal Update Distribution
  28. will receive the new software and license number from SRDO for ICON
  29. and U.S., and from SRDE for Europe.  Customers' license numbers remain
  30. the same.  Licenses distributed to trade order customers for the
  31. B version are still valid with the new C version.
  32.  
  33. Some key points to keep in mind:
  34.  
  35.   -LM/X version B SE licenses no longer work with LM/X version C.
  36.  
  37.   -Installing LM/X C on a server that is using a B SE license will
  38.    render it inoperable.
  39.  
  40.   -LM/X version B customer licenses will work with LM/X version C.
  41.  
  42.   -Customers that install LM/X version C on a LM/X version B server
  43.    will NOT have to reinstall their licenses since they still apply.
  44.  
  45.   -Customers on Update Services will NOT receive new licenses because
  46.    their LM/X version B license still applies.
  47.  
  48.   -It is the last entered license (serial number and activation key)
  49.    that determines the number of clients supported by the server.
  50.  
  51.   -No two LM/X servers on the network may have the same serial number
  52.    activation keys.  If they do, only the first one started will start
  53.    correctly.
  54.  
  55.   -Customers with PC clients that connect to only LM/X version C
  56.    servers should update their clients to the LAN Manager 2.1 client.

  58.   -Customers with PC clients that connect to a mix of LM/X versions
  59.    (B and/or A) should NOT update their clients so that they maintain
  60.    a supported client configuration.

  64. Customers have two ways of updating the B version to C.
  65.  
  66.   -When they originally purchased the B product, they could (and should
  67.    be encouraged) to purchase the software material update service.
  68.    By doing so, they receive new versions of LM/X 1.x.
  69.  
  70.    Customers on Update services will NOT receive new licenses.
  71.    The license they received with the B version is still valid for C.
  72.  
  73.   -Purchasing the C product and ordering the appropriate upgrade option
  74.    to move from B to C.  There is a minimal charge to move between
  75.    versions.
  76.  
  77.    Customers that install LM/X version C on a LM/X version B server
  78.    will NOT have to reinstall their licenses since the B license is
  79.    still valid for C.

  83. Following are Q&As for customer situations you may encounter.
  84.  
  85. 1.  My customer is running LM/X version B and has purchased Update
  86.     Services, what do they get?
  87.  
  88.     Customers on update services will receive the new LM/X server
  89.     software and the new LAN Manager 2.1 client software.  They will
  90.     also receive new manuals.  They will NOT receive a new license.
  91.     Licenses distributed to customers with LM/X version B and installed
  92.     on the LM/X server are still valid with version C.
  93.  
  94. 2.  My customer is not on Update Services, how do they get the C
  95.     version?
  96.  
  97.     An order needs to be placed for either B1003C (300/400) or B1011C
  98.     (700/800) with the appropriate upgrade option moving from B to C.
  99.     Previous purchase of B1003B/B1011B is required.
  100.  
  101. 3.  My customer is running LM/X version A and missed the upgrade period
  102.     to LM/X version B, what should they do?
  103.  
  104.     Unfortunately, there are no credits for customers moving from A to
  105.     C. This customer needs to purchase the new C product, B1003C or
  106.     B1011C.  They should be encouraged to purchase the Software
  107.     Material Update Service at the same time.  By doing so, they will
  108.     be entitled to all updates for LM/X 1.x.
  109.  
  110. 4.  My customer is running LM/X version A and purchased update services
  111.     after the B version was released.  How do they get C?
  112.  
  113.     They will need to purchase the C product, B1003C or B1011C.  There
  114.     are no credits for version A purchases.  The customer must have
  115.     purchased LM/X version B to be entitled to LM/X version C update
  116.     services.  The Software Material Update Service will allow them to
  117.     receive all new updates for the LM/X 1.x product.

  119. 5.  My customer has been running LM/X version B with the SE demo
  120.     license. How do they get C?
  121.  
  122.     They must purchase the C product, B1003C or B1011C.  No credits
  123.     will apply.  The SE demo license is intended to be used as a short
  124.     term sales tool which allows customers an opportunity to experience
  125.     the  LM/X software.  Version B SE demo licenses will NOT work with
  126.     LM/X version C.  Installing the LM/X version C software will render
  127.     the LM/X server inoperative until a valid license is purchased.

  129. 6.  My customer has been running LM/X version B with the SE demo
  130.     license and some how got onto the update service.  What should they
  131.     do?
  132.  
  133.     They will need to purchase the C version, B1003C or B1011C.
  134.     No credits will apply.  Customers must purchase LM/X version B to
  135.     be entitled to update services.  The SE demo license is intended to
  136.     be used as a short term sales tool which allows customers an
  137.     opportunity to experience the LM/X software.  Version B SE
  138.     demo licenses will NOT work with LM/X version C.  If the customer
  139.     receives LM/X version C software via update services, installation
